The First 90 Days

Logic Jiu-Jitsu Philadelphia wasn’t built from a business plan, but instead from a friendship.

Coach Dennis Pressey and his best friend Kristian Woodmansee spent years training full-time together, bouncing between gyms across the country and competing at the highest levels. When Woodmansee won a world championship and eventually moved back to the Philadelphia area, he took over a struggling academy. Pressey was there from day one as one of the lead instructors.

Seven years later, when Woodmansee relocated to Georgia to open a new academy, Pressey took ownership of Logic, and inherited both something worth building on, and a lot of work to do.

“It was not in a great position,” Pressey said. “I really had to put some money and some effort in, and make some hard changes very quickly.”

Located in one of the most competitive martial arts markets in the country, Logic sits in a city where competing academies are just blocks away. Its core offering is group classes in Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, plus a dedicated kids program.

What sets Logic apart though, is its deliberate focus on beginners. Pressey explained that he isn’t trying to recruit experienced grapplers. He’s trying to find the person who has never thrown a punch, never been on a mat, or hasn’t moved their body in years. He’s built an onboarding system around making that person feel like they belong, and making sure they come back.

New members join a 28-day beginner program, have check-ins with coaches, and aren’t allowed to train more than three times a week, so they don’t burn out.

Pressey said if they can get someone training consistently for four weeks, there’s a good chance they’ll stick around. And his numbers prove it: He’s only owned Logic for 90 days, and his conversion rate from first-timers to new students is currently 68%.

The Win: Simplifying Everything

When Pressey took over as the owner of Logic, the first thing he did was look for areas where they might be overcomplicating things.

Previously, offers changed excessively as the team experimented with different lengths, gear policies, and pricing. Pressey remembers that every time the offer changed, the automation had to change with it, and staff wasn’t even sure of what they were currently promoting.

Prospective students could feel the uncertainty.

“When a salesperson, or any member—front desk, anybody in the flow—is unsure, the customer feels that,” Pressey said.

The fix wasn’t complicated. He simplified the offer to a single, 28-day program at one price, with no gear or loaner equipment. On the staff side, this meant not having to manage 15 people in borrowed uniforms before every class.

The other, super-effective fix was limiting automations to two messages, maximum. Pressey said that now, when someone opts in through the website, they get a personal message from a coach, simply asking if they’ve ever trained before.

“This usually gets engagement back,” he said.

If they don’t respond within two days, they get one follow-up asking if the timing is off. After that, they move to a long-term nurture sequence that provides value and never sells anything.

To make it even simpler and save him time, everything is built into Wodify. Logic switched to Wodify three and a half years ago when Woodmansee was still running the gym. When Pressey took over, he started optimizing the platform and using it more deliberately. A few weeks ago, the Wodify team even came into the academy and helped him see features he wasn’t even aware of yet.

“Wodify’s automations are certainly being implemented much more, and helping us greatly,” Pressey said.

How to Win in YOUR Academy

When asked about the advice he’d give to other academy owners, Pressey said to stop overcomplicating things. For example:

  • If your offer keeps changing, your staff can’t execute it confidently.
  • Automations with 30 steps leaves everyone confused, and nobody knows what’s actually working.
  • If you’re trying to convert experienced competitors instead of total beginners, you’re chasing a small audience in a market full of academies chasing the same people.

The practical version of what Pressey built looks like this: one entry offer, one price, a clear onboarding path with coach check-ins, and two automated messages maximum before someone moves to a long-term nurture sequence. When staff can walk someone from inquiry to membership with no hesitation, the customer follows.

Wodify’s automations make that kind of process repeatable without adding overhead. The less time your front desk spends figuring out what to do next, the more time they spend actually talking to the person standing in front of them.

What’s Next for Logic Jiu-Jitsu Philadelphia

Pressey isn’t thinking small for his next steps.

His short-term goal is a second location in South Philly. After that, he wants to franchise, and has set a target of 50 locations nationwide within the next two years.

The foundation he’s building at the original location is designed to scale. He has a clear offer, tight processes, and a member-driven marketing approach built on real stories. He’s not trying to build a gym that depends on him being on the mats every day. He’s building something that someone else can run the same way.

And for a business with an uncertain future just three months ago, 68% conversion and a franchise roadmap in the works is a pretty solid start.
